Small Town, Big Heart

By Samm Carbone

Delphi is a much smaller, quieter town tucked away in its place in the mountains of Central Greece, especially compared to the hustle and bustle of the other cities we visited. There was a more laid-back vibe and not a lot of foot or car traffic.

The narrow streets are lined with small shops, hotels, and restaurants that are open late for the tourists that flock there. Despite its small size, Delphi is packed with a rich history within its archeological sites, which is what makes it such a popular tourist destination.

This town allowed me to feel the most at home thanks to the warm locals. During my conversations with them, it was clear how important family was to them and that they would treat you like family as well. One shop, run by a man and his wife, emphasized being good company and they were! I did not feel like they were just trying to entice me to buy something, so I browsed while I listened to the shop owner discuss his family history and ties to the land. I learned that it was common for the younger generations to follow in their parent's footsteps when it came to the businesses they run. But for this family, the future seems to be more uncertain as the younger generations are sticking around less and branching out more. They will end up seeking better opportunities that are offered in cities such as Athens and Thessaloniki. I hope that there are individuals in the younger generations that will carry on the traditions that make Delphi so charming as the population ages, so more people can get to experience their hospitality and kindness.
